The Canoe Club Rimini, founded the 12th of March in1984, has taken back the passion for the oar and the paddle that it had spread in our city just before the sixties , precisely in 1957, when Ettore Costantini and Gioacchino Babbi decided to create a section of Canoe and Rowing in the risen Polisportiva Libertas a few years before the1950.
The best athlete definitely of this first period of the riminese canoe sport remains Sebastiano Pellegrini that in 1963, with the Marina Militare ( Italian Navy) Sporting Group, he won four Italian National Championships: the 10.000 m. K2 juniors, the 1.000 m. K2 juniors, the 1.000 m. overall K2, and the relay race 4 X 500 m. overall K2. Unfortunately, for logistic motives, the kayaking activity was suspended in 1964. Then, even if initially the activity of the Kayak Canoe Club Rimini has been recreational (on the sea and down the rivers), we can certainly affirm that the roots of the riminese canoeing and kayaking belong to the Flat Water Olympic discipline. In fact some former Libertas athletes, as Lino Vici and Gigi Pompili are still active member, and the first one was also one of the club founder. In 1988 the restarting of Flat Water kayaking competition activity of the Canoe Club Rimini happened because of Andrea Arcangeli, Marcello's son, the former Chairman of the old Libertas section of canoe and kayaking . This athlete becomes FICK Instructor in 1990 and he has got the best racing performance in 1994 in Milan (Idroscalo facility), winning the third place in the Masters category K1 1000m. Thanks to the help of Maurice Vanetti, a paddler coming from Sesto Calende,(Maggiore Lake north Italy) and to Gigi Pompili, Ugo Donati and Albino Di Lieto, (former Italian National team member during the 80's). Andrea Arcangeli creates, in 1999, the Flat Water Kayaking Center for Beginner, on the Santarini Lake (San Martino dei Mulini located 15Km to the SW of Rimini). Ideal place for training class for the youth. Since the year 2000, the lake ( kindly granted by the Santarini family) is used for organizing the 5.000 m..Regional Championship. However today the Santarini Lake is owned by CMV a local construction company. We thank so much the Santarini family first, and the CMV company for continuing to let us use the lake and the house for boat storage. To underline the bond of this competition with the history of the riminese paddlers, considering that the last competition organized by the Libertas took place on the same date, but 39 years before, the 2000 competition has been named "second edition". All the young athletes attending the Canoe Kayak Center for beginners, achieved good results during races. The best performance belongs to Alfredo Arcangeli that placed fourth at the 2002 Italian youth tournament.
